Here's an overview of the typical work involved in floor sanding:
- Preparation:
- Clearing the room of furniture and other items to create a clear workspace.
- Removing any nails or staples that protrude from the surface.
- Inspecting the floor for any damage or uneven areas that may need repair.
Sanding:
- Coarse Sanding: The initial sanding process begins with coarse-grit sandpaper to remove the old finish, stains, scratches, and imperfections. This step levels the surface and prepares it for finer sanding.
- Medium Sanding: A medium-grit sandpaper is used to further smooth out the surface and eliminate any remaining imperfections.
- Fine Sanding: Fine-grit sandpaper is used to achieve a smooth and uniform finish on the wood surface. This step ensures that the floor is ready for staining or sealing.
- Edging:
- Edging sanders or hand sanders are used to sand areas that the large floor sander couldn't reach, such as edges, corners, and around fixtures.
- Gap Filling (if necessary):
- Gaps between floorboards may be filled with a suitable wood filler to create a seamless surface. This step improves the appearance and durability of the floor.
- Staining (optional):
- If you desire a different colour for your floor, staining can be applied after sanding. Stain adds colour and enhances the appearance of the wood grain.
- Sealing/Finishing:
- Once the desired look is achieved, the floor is sealed with a protective coat.
